What the makers' own data sheets say, side by side.

Speed, process, grain, resolving power and long-exposure corrections for 25 films you can buy, each figure read from the maker's sheet and linked. Where a maker publishes no figure, the space says so; nothing here is estimated. Checked 2026-10-21.

New to the numbers? Deep cuts explains rms granularity, Print Grain Index and how a film's speed is measured; the reciprocity calculator uses the long-exposure rules below.

Grain league: diffuse rms granularity

Diffuse rms granularity: lower is finer. Kodak and Fujifilm read it with a 48-micrometre aperture at a density of 1.0 (slide films at a gross visual density); it describes the negative, not the print.

Print Grain Index: how grainy a print from 35mm looks

Print Grain Index: 25 is about the threshold of visible grain at 14 inches; 4 units is a just-noticeable difference for 90% of observers. Kodak says it cannot be compared with rms granularity.

4x6 print 8x10 16x20 · the vertical line is 25, where grain starts to show; "below 25" is drawn on it. Source: Kodak's data sheets, linked below.

  • A chromogenic film: the image is dye, formed in standard C-41 colour chemistry.
  • Harman says push processing gives no practical speed increase; rate it at EI 800 with normal processing instead, and labs should replenish as for an ISO 200 colour negative.

Ilford's rule: corrected seconds = metered seconds ^ 1.33 beyond 1 second (a metered 10 s becomes 21 s).
  • Harman's measured speed is ISO 1000; 3200 is the recommended meter setting, and it can go to EI 25000 with testing.
